In February 1975 the cornerstone of the old Freeman Hospital on 20th and Sergeant was opened for the first time in 51 years by members of the Hospital Board.Ā It was removed so that artifacts inside the stone could be placed in a time capsule at the new Freeman Hospital on 32nd Street.

A list of artifacts recovered from the Freeman Hospital’s cornerstone were:

  • a Bible

  • a newspaper clipping announcing the cornerstone laying ceremony

  • a copy of the original Freeman Hospital charter

  • New items placed in the time capsule included telegrams from President Gerald R. Ford and Missouri Governor Christopher Bond

The Freeman Time Capsule and its contents were placed in a hole near the base of the flagpole at the main, south entrance of the new hospital requesting that it be opened on the 100th anniversary of Freeman Hospital in 2025. 50 years later and the old Freeman Hospital is now gone, including its cornerstone which was never recovered. Freeman Health recently celebrated their 100th anniversary, which means that the time capsule is ready to be opened. But what happened to the time capsule? Is it still there waiting to be opened? Was it moved? Or just like the original Freeman Hospital, is it lost forever?
