Good Morning, Joplin. Twenty-five years ago today, September 11, 2001 began like any other Tuesday morning. By the end of it, nearly 3,000 people had been killed, countless lives had changed forever, and a date on the calendar had taken on a meaning that an entire generation would never forget.

A quarter-century later, there are now adults who weren't alive when the attacks happened—and kids learning about 9/11 as history rather than memory. For those who do remember, it's one of those rare days where almost everyone can tell you exactly where they were when they heard the news.

Today, flags across the country will fly at half-staff in remembrance of the 2,977 lives lost. September 11 is also recognized as Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance—a fitting reminder that one of the most enduring responses to that terrible day was how quickly ordinary people showed up for one another.

So before we get into what's happening around Joplin today, it's worth taking a moment to remember those we lost 25 years ago—and the first responders, families, survivors, and countless others whose lives were forever changed.

Pitt State ROTC to Hold 9/11 Patriot Day Remembrance

Friday, September 11 | 8:00–11:00 AM | Carnie Smith Stadium, Pittsburg

Pittsburg State University ROTC will hold its annual Patriot Day Remembrance Friday morning at the northwest corner of Carnie Smith Stadium. Beginning at 8:00 AM, cadets will take turns reading the names of the 2,987 people who died as a result of the September 11 attacks, completing one pushup for each name. The public is invited to attend, reflect and, if they choose, join cadets in completing pushups. Admission is free.

Throughout the morning, the ROTC cannon will be fired six times to mark significant moments from September 11, 2001:

• 8:46 AM — Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower

• 9:03 AM — Flight 175 crashes into the South Tower

• 9:37 AM — Flight 77 impacts the Pentagon

• 9:59 AM — South Tower collapses

• 10:03 AM — Flight 93 crashes in Pennsylvania

• 10:28 AM — North Tower collapses

The remembrance is expected to conclude around 11:00 AM, or when the final name is read.

⛏️ Mining Days Festival Returns to Webb City

Saturday, September 12 | 10:00 AM–Sunset | 1000 Dawson Dr., Webb City

Webb City’s Mining Days Festival returns Saturday for a full day celebrating the community and its rich mining history. The festival will feature local vendors, food trucks, live music and plenty of family-friendly activities throughout the day.

Visitors can also check out a car show and dog show, while kids will have activities of their own to enjoy. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. and continue through sunset at 1000 Dawson Drive in Webb City.

🎀 Freeman Hosting Breast Cancer Survivors Health Fair

Thursday, September 17 | 4:00–6:00 PM | Freeman Women’s Center

Freeman Health System is hosting a Breast Cancer Survivors Health Fair focused on wellness, recovery and connection after breast cancer. Survivors can meet healthcare professionals, learn about supportive services and explore resources designed to help with life during and after recovery.

The event will take place in the Women’s Center Conference Room at 1532 W. 32nd Street. Freeman’s Pink Door Boutique will also be open during the fair, offering 20% off merchandise, excluding bras and breast forms.
