Major Roadwork Alert: West 20th Street to Close April 7 for Major Upgrade Project 🚧

Heads up, drivers! Starting Monday, April 7th, West 20th Street will be completely closed to through traffic between Iron Gates Road and Country Club Drive as work kicks off on the highly anticipated 20th Street widening project.

⚠️ What to Expect:
This is a full road closure, so expect to follow clearly marked detour routes. If you live within the closed section, you’ll still be able to access your home—but only from the east end of the work zone.

🚧 What’s Happening:
This massive capital improvement project will widen about two miles of West 20th Street—from Schifferdecker Avenue to Central City Road—expanding it from two lanes to three. The project also includes:

  • Major intersection upgrades at Country Club Drive and Central City Road

  • Brand-new curbs and gutters

  • A shared-use path for walkers, runners, and cyclists—making the route more accessible and safe for everyone

💰 Project Cost & Funding:
The total price tag? $9.8 million. The work is being handled by Emery Sapp and Sons, Inc., and the project is funded through a mix of sources:

  • The Capital Improvement Sales Tax (approved in 2014 and renewed by voters in 2024)

  • City of Joplin funds

  • Jasper County ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) support

  • Help from the Joplin Special Road District
