Good Morning, Joplin. Today’s issue comes with something new—and very Joplin. We’re officially introducing JOMO History, a new section dedicated to the stories, buildings, moments, and forgotten details that helped shape our city. It’s written by Brady Cloud, whose local history posts have sparked countless “I never knew that” moments around town. As you read, consider this your official invitation to weigh in: do you like it, or have a story you think should be covered next? Hit reply or take the poll at the bottom of the newsletter and let us know—this section is for the community, and your feedback helps shape where it goes next.

Brady has been a resident of Carthage his whole life. He is currently a student at Pittsburg State University studying Construction Management and in his spare time chronicles the people and places that have contributed to Jasper County’s incredible history. He enjoys getting the chance to bring stories that have otherwise been forgotten back into public life in order to preserve local history.

In today’s JOMO Jive:

  • JOMO History by Brady Cloud

  • Joplin’s State of the Community Event

  • A new boutique’s grand opening

Let’s get to it.

P.S. If you find something useful in today’s Jive, please share it with someone who loves Joplin history.

🏨 The Medical Arts Building: Joplin’s Grand Skyscraper That Never Was

by: Brady Cloud

On March 17, 1929, Joplin businessman R. W. Cole unveiled plans for what was intended to become one of the city’s most ambitious construction projects. Rising on the northeast corner of Fifth and Joplin Streets, the proposed Medical Arts Building promised to reshape the city’s skyline. Designed by Kansas City architect Albert Wiser—who was completing the Mayflower Apartments at the time—the building was envisioned as a 12-story, L-shaped tower built of marble, brick, terra cotta, and steel. Stretching 125 feet along Fifth Street and 100 feet along Joplin Street, it would have featured approximately 117 offices and 26,000 square feet dedicated to medical and professional services…
