THE DIGEST
What is Presidents’ Day? 🟥 ⬜️ 🟦
If you didn’t already know, today is Presidents’ Day. Originally established in 1885 to recognize George Washington’s birthday, the holiday later expanded to celebrate all U.S. presidents. And while it’s true that Washington’s birthday became a federal holiday in 1885, the term “Presidents’ Day” became more widely used after the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971, which aimed to provide more three-day weekends for the nations workers.
Presidents’ Day Sales 🤑
Presidents’ Day is also known for major savings event of the year. If you’re looking for deals, you’re in luck! Many national retailers in Joplin are offering major markdowns on furniture, mattresses, electronics and clothing. Stores like Best Buy, Lowe’s, And Home Depot also have sales running through today.
Locally owned businesses may be running promotions too, so it’s worth checking in with your favorite shops around town. And if you’re looking to grab a bite, remember that some local spots may have limited hours today.
What’s Open and Closed Today? ❌
Government offices, post offices, banks and the stock market are closed in observance of the holiday, but most restaurants and stores remain open. UPS and FedEx will also remain open today. Here’s the gist—If you have errands to run, double-check before heading out!
Joplin Reschedules City Council Meeting 🤝
Mother Nature is calling the shots this week, and the Joplin City Council is listening. The scheduled Tuesday night meeting has been moved to Monday, March 3rd at 6:00 PM to dodge the incoming weather. If you were planning to attend, the location stays the same: Joplin City Hall. So if you’re into civic duty or just like watching democracy in action, make sure to adjust your plans.
Grocery Spending Trends: Missouri’s Munching Habits 🥩
According to a recent WalletHub report, Missouri households are shelling out an average of $8,000 annually on groceries. This places us in 30th in the nation for grocery spending. With Missouri being the 6th cheapest state to reside in, we should be called the “Show-Me-the-Snacks” state. Full report here.
Local Egg Farmer Scrambles to Keep Up with Demand 🥚
Speaking of groceries, what’s the deal with these egg prices? Local egg farmer Tiffany Wheeler says she’s putting out eggs for sale around 8:00 AM and they’re usually gone by 11:00. Walmart is selling eggs for $5.46 per dozen, while Tiffany sells hers for $4. If you know of any local egg farmers, it might be time to give them a chance to save a buck.
Got Old Toys? 🕹️
The “Toy Scout” wants to give you cash for your old toys. If you’ve got vintage toys collecting dust in your attic, it might be time to cash in. Joel Magee from Pawn Stars’ last day in town is today at the Homewood Suites in Joplin from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. He’s looking to buy everything from Star Wars figures to Hot Wheels and board games. Magee is particularly interested in toys from the 1980’s and earlier but even 1990’s collectibles could fetch a good price. More information here.
