Children’s Center Has 28th Annual Gala

Over the weekend at Downstream Casino, The Children’s Center had their 28th annual gala to help raise money for children in need. The Old Hollywood theme had guests dressing their best while the main feature of the event was a live auction. Last year the Children’s Center helped more than 900 child abuse survivors in southwest Missouri.

28th Annual Children’s Center Gala at the Downstream Pavilion

Abbey Edwards, Children’s Center of Southwest Missouri development coordinator said “At the Children’s Center, we receive about 60% of our funding from federal and state grant support. And then the other 40% we fundraise.” If you’d like to help the Children’s Center, consider donating here.

Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year Nominations

Do you remember your favorite teacher? Odds are they’re retired. But if they’re not, you should nominate them for The Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has announced that nominations are officially open. This is the first step in selecting next year’s Missouri Teacher of the Year. Nominations are anonymous and must be submitted by April 14th. Teachers can be nominated by students, parents, colleagues, or community members. Submit your nomination here!

Road Closure on West 20th Street

If you’re susceptible to road rage, you should consider avoiding west 20th Street for the next few weeks. The City of Joplin says Liberty Utilities will start relocating power poles in preparation for the city’s widening project of west 20th Street. The work will be done in sections starting with Shifferdecker Avenue to Iron Gates Road. After that, the next section will be from Iron Gates Road to Black Cat Road, and finally from Black Cat Road to Central City Road. The widening project will create a three lane road, add curbs and gutters, and shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists. The City of Joplin expects the project to take four to six weeks. We’re going to take the “over” on this one…

Two Lions Set School Records at Pittsburg Invitational

The Missouri Southern men’s and women’s Indoor Track & Field teams delivered a standout performance this weekend at the Pittsburg Invitational, but it was Nurian Musa and JaDarius Pigg that broke two school records. Musa sported a 21.45 seconds in the Men’s 200m Dash, while Pigg boasted an impressive 7.88 seconds in the Men’s 60m Hurdles.

Joplin 10-Year-Old Nominated for Grammy

Although Tristan Wilder Hallet didn’t win the esteemed award, he was incredibly close to becoming one of the youngest people to ever win a Grammy. Tristan is 10 now, but he was nominated for The Shining Opera, which was a performance he recorded when he was only 8. Tristan played the role of Danny Torrance. Last night it was announced that Saariaho: Adriana Mater was the Grammy winner.
