Joplin Furniture Store Bets Big on Chiefs Victory
Wayside Furniture in Joplin is promising customers a full refund on purchases if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl by 14 points or more. It’s a bold move, but hey, if the refs Patrick Mahomes can work his magic on the field, your new couch might just end up free. Wayside ran a similar promotion back in December when the Chiefs played the Steelers—They ended up sending out 140 refund checks worth almost $250,000 when Kansas City won by 19 points.
Dollar Tree Opens New Joplin Location

Joplin Officers Honored with National Public Servant Award
Two of Joplin’s finest were recognized with the National Public Servant Award, celebrating their dedication and service to the community and our country. Corporal Ben Cooper and Joplin Fire Department Training Chief Mark Cannon both received the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Public Servant Award. Cooper’s award was accepted by his wife, Roxy and their two daughters. He lost his life in the line of duty in March of 2022, along with JPD Officer, Jake Reed. Cannon accepted his award with his wife and daughter by his side.

January Civic Recap
A lot happened in Joplin last month, from major road improvements to a local team proving they’re the best at mowing in Missouri. Whether you love infrastructure updates, community wins, or just knowing what’s going on, here are some of the top civic events from January you should know about:
Joplin’s Sunshine Lamp Trolley is Back - The beloved trolley service made its grand return, helping residents and visitors get around town with ease. Next stop: nostalgia (and hopefully your actual destination).
JATSO Wants Your Opinion On Transportation Plans - Joplin’s Area Transportation Study Organization (JATSO) is taking public input on its 2025 Public Participation Plan. This is your chance to suggest better roads, more sidewalks, or maybe even a high-speed rail to Kansas City (we can dream).
Joplin Gets Its First Safe Haven Baby Box - A new Baby Box was installed at Fire Station 7, providing a safe and anonymous way for parents in crisis to surrender newborns.
Utility Drop Box is Back in Action - After being damaged by winter weather, the city’s utility payment drop box is fixed and ready for use. That’s great news for anyone who still enjoys paying bills the old-fashioned way.
St Louis Avenue Closed for Stormwater Upgrades - The city shut down St. Louis Ave between 8th St and Campbell Pkwy to improve drainage and reduce flooding. If you were looking for an excuse to take the scenic route, this was it.
West 20th Street Widening Project Begins - Utility work kicked off in preparation for a $9.8 million road-widening project that will improve traffic flow and add pedestrian pathways.
Joplin Parks Team Wins Maintenance Rodeo - Our local Parks & Rec maintenance crew dominated the Missouri Parks & Recreation Association’s competition.
Leaf Pick-Up Program Nears Completion - The city’s annual leaf pickup program wrapped up its final rounds. If you missed it, you can start pretending leaves are part of your landscaping aesthetic.
Joplin Airport Gets a New Manager - Allison Zahner stepped into the role of Airport Manager following the retirement of Bart Starkey.
Joplin’s civic scene may not have taken your breath away, but there are definitely important things to know. Continue to stay tuned while we give you the latest local updates—because knowing what’s happening in town is way more fun than realizing there’s a road closure when you’re already late.
