THE DIGEST

Severe Weather Preparedness Week 🌪️

Here’s a reminder that this week is Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Missouri.

Monday (Receiving Weather Information): Staying informed is the first step in severe weather preparedness. On Monday, officials will highlight the importance of having multiple ways to receive weather alerts, such as NOAA Weather Radios, emergency alerts on mobile devices, and local news sources. Understanding different types of alerts—like watches and warnings—can help residents respond quickly to dangerous weather conditions.

Tuesday (Lightning Safety): Lightning is one of the most unpredictable and deadly aspects of severe storms. On Tuesday, safety experts will emphasize the “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors” rule, encouraging people to seek shelter immediately when they hear thunder. They will also discuss safe indoor practices, such as avoiding plumbing and electronic devices, and ways to stay protected if caught outside during a storm.

Joplin Fire Department: Beware Fake Fundraiser Scam 🚨

We have been receiving reports of a person identifying themselves as Cody Lee with Fire Safety Programs, soliciting funds stating it is to help ‘Joplin Area Fire Departments’.”

- Chief Steve Coats of the Redings Mill Fire Protection District

The Joplin Fire Department is sounding the alarm about a fraudulent fundraising scam targeting area residents and businesses. Scammers are impersonating fire department representatives—even dropping real JFD officers’ names, and asking for donations.

The JFD wants everyone to know it’s not legit. In fact, they aren’t doing any fundraising drives right now. If you receive any of these calls, hang up—and definitely don’t hand over any cash or personal info.

Carthage Starbucks Opens on South Grand Ave ☕️

The new Starbucks is officially open in Carthage! I’m sure members of Forest Park Baptist Church are stoked, considering they sold a portion of their parking lot for the build. You may remember a couple weeks ago we announced Starbucks brought back their beloved cafe experience: mugs, glasses, the condiment bar, and free refills of hot or iced brewed coffee or tea.

Here’s a fun Starbucks hack: Starbucks allows customers to get any drink on the menu in any personal cup from home to score a $0.10 discount and 25 bonus Stars (when using the app). You can earn a free hot or iced coffee or tea with 100 Stars. That means, by bringing your own cup, you’ll get free Starbucks coffee every fourth visit!

Neosho Students Get an Early College Jumpstart 🎓️

High school students in Neosho are getting a head start on college thanks to a new Early College Experience Program. This initiative, in partnership with Crowder College, allows teens to earn college credits while still in high school. As sophomores and juniors, students will take courses on the high school campus, earning 27 credit hours. Their senior year will be on the campus of Crowder College.

Not only does this program allow students to attend at a reduced rate, but they will end up with two years of college experience when they complete high school. These students will breeze through college faster than hitting all green lights on Rangeline.
