Good Morning, Joplin. During the month of February, we had over 1,000 new subscribers join the newsletter. I (Matt) couldn’t be more genuinely appreciative of all of you. The amount of positive reviews and feedback I’ve gotten is truly overwhelming. Celebrate with me by entering your dog into our First Annual Mutt Madness. It’s a free, friendly competition and it’s may way of saying thank you for all your support!

In today’s JOMO Jive:

  • Daylight Savings

  • Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Flood Safety

  • Free Limb Dropoff Program

  • Sofa City USA to Replace Furniture Factory Outlet

  • St. Patrick’s Day 5K

  • Hideout Harley Davison Closing

  • Weekend Events & Live Music Lowdown

Let’s get to it.

— Matt Thompson

P.S. If you find something useful in today’s Jive, please share it with someone who used to have two dogs but one died, so they had to get another dog so the other one wouldn’t be lonely.

P.P.S. I swear this newsletter isn’t all about dogs.

THE DIGEST

There’s still time to enter your dog into our Mutt Madness competition! We only have space for 64 dogs, and about half are already taken, so hustle up and send us the best picture of your pooch! Voting begins next week, but we need pictures of your dogs by 9:00 PM tonight so we can get our bracket put together.

Daylight Savings is This Sunday ☀️

Consider this your friendly reminder to set your clocks forward an hour before you go to bed on Saturday night! And when we say “set your clocks”, we’re really just referring to your car radio, your oven & microwave, and that random analog clock on the wall that can drive you crazy if the house is quiet enough. Here’s a fun map that shows all the extra daylight we will gain this month:

Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Flood Safety 🌊

Flood Safety is the topic of the day today. Did you know flooding results in more weather related fatalities than any other thunderstorm related hazard? This is because many of the deaths occur in automobiles when driven through flooded roads and they are swept downstream. Many of these deaths can be prevented, but too many people continue to drive across flooded roads. You’ve heard the saying, “Turn around. Don’t drown.”

Free Limb Drop Off Program 🌳

Yard work is hard. And don’t even get us started about tree trimming. Not only is a pain to cut all those limbs, but you have to figure out what to do with all of them! You could burn them. OR you could participate in the free limb drop off program. Residents (non-contractors) can bring their limbs on March 14th and 15th to 1702 N Schifferdecker Avenue from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM.

Click here for a full list of dates, as well as items that are NOT permitted.

Sofa City USA to Replace Furniture Factory Outlet 🪑

When one door closes, another opens. FFO closed its doors at the tail end of 2024, and within months, Sofa City USA has swooped in to take their spot. There is no specific open date set, but contractors are busy making improvements to the building, so we don’t anticipate it being long! With an already-established footprint in the Midwest, including Missouri and Arkansas, we think Sofa City USA might be here to stay.

Check out their website for what you can expect to see in store!

The Ronald McDonald House St. Patrick’s Day 5K 🏃

Let’s be honest, you gave up on your New Year’s Resolution 2 months ago. That’s okay, we did, too. Well next weekend is a great opportunity to kick off Spring with a 5K run. The Ronald McDonald House is partnering with Tamko on March 15th for the St. Patty’s Day 5K run that starts at Runaround Running and Lifestyle.

We don’t expect you to get in shape from now until race day, but any training is better than no training! Check out the event here.

Hideout Harley Davidson Closing 🏍️

Longtime motorcycle dealer Hideout Harley Davidson is closing its doors permanently on March 31st. From now until the end of the month, they’ll be reducing prices on current inventory. They’ve also adjusted their hours of operations to be from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Saturday.

After proudly serving the SWMO Community and helping riders find their Freedom on the open road, we’ll close our doors for the final time on Monday, March 31st—Forever grateful for the memories and journeys shared.

MSSU Qualifies 10 for NCAA Indoor National Championships 🏃

The Missouri Southern track & field teams are headed to the 2025 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, with ten individuals competing on the national stage. The championship meet will take place from Thursday, March 13th though Saturday, March 15th at the Fall Creek Pavilion in Indianapolis, IN.

Kelly Richardson Named New Volleyball Coach 🏐

The women’s volleyball team will have a new head coach after Kalie Carlile resigned back in January. Richardson has had previous coaching experience at Western Illinois University and Southwest Baptist University. Although she’s had collegiate coaching experience, her previous role was Club Director of the 417 Juniors Volleyball Club, which is now one of the most competitive clubs in the region. Richardson helped expand that club to 37 teams competing at the highest level. We’re hopeful she’ll be a valuable asset to the MSSU volleyball program.
