THE DIGEST
Webb City Might Expand Fireworks Sales Season 🧨 🎆
Good news for fireworks fans: Webb City could soon give you a few extra days to stock up before the Fourth of July.
The city council is considering a proposal to expand the window for fireworks sales from the current July 1–4 to a longer stretch: June 27 through July 4. However, even if the change passes, it won’t affect when you’re allowed to actually set off fireworks—those dates would still be July 1–4 only.
The proposal will be up for discussion at the city council meeting tonight.
Joplin Crusaders Soar Past Oklahoma Hawks in Season Opener 🏈
The Joplin Crusaders braved rain, mud, and missing sideline markers to cruise to a 44–8 win over the Oklahoma Hawks Saturday night. Running back Elliot Hawings bulldozed for two touchdowns, and the Crusaders' defense swarmed all game long, forcing turnovers and shutting down drives. A late Hawks touchdown avoided the shutout, but the night belonged to Joplin — complete with big plays, wild weather, and even a little endzone dancing.
Big changes are also happening off the field: semi-pro football introduced new rule updates this year to streamline games, and Southern Sports Network launched new partnerships to bring even more coverage to fans. Next up, the Crusaders hit the road to face the Tulsa Gators in what’s expected to be one of their toughest tests of the season.

Civic Updates
👶 Big Changes Coming to Kansas Childcare with New Law
Kansas is giving its childcare system a major overhaul. Governor Laura Kelly has signed House Bill 2045, creating a new Office of Early Childhood and setting the stage for big updates across the state.
Here’s what’s changing:
🏛️ More than 20 programs consolidated into one agency
👶 Plans to expand childcare openings across Kansas
🧑🏫 Education requirements adjusted for some childcare workers
🧮 Adult-to-child ratios updated for facilities
The new Office of Early Childhood is expected to officially launch in mid-2026. Until then, Kansas families can expect gradual changes aimed at expanding access and streamlining services.
