🌳 Free Tree Limb Disposal Open Through May 24

Following the severe storms on May 19, the City of Joplin has opened a temporary tree limb drop-off site to help residents clear storm damage. The site is located at 1702 North Schifferdecker Avenue and will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Saturday, May 24.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • 🌳 Tree limbs only — no other storm debris accepted

  • 📍 Open to Joplin residents only

  • 🚫 No contractors allowed

  • ✂️ Limbs must be cut to 4 feet or shorter, no more than 4 inches in diameter

🧠 MSSU Launches New 3D Printing Center for Precision Health

Missouri Southern State University officially unveiled its latest leap into health science innovation with the launch of the Missouri 3D Printing Center for Precision Health. Funded by the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development’s Science to Jobs program, the center is designed to serve both as a research hub and a workforce training site.

While healthcare is the primary focus, the center will be open to anyone interested in learning 3D printing skills. Dr. Crystal Lemmons, Dean of the College of Health, highlighted its potential in dental medicine, while MSSU President Dr. Dean Van Galen emphasized plans to offer certificates and training to students and professionals alike. Courses haven’t started just yet, and for now, the center is temporarily housed in the Ummel Technology Building. It will move into the highly anticipated Roy Blunt Health Science Innovation Center when it opens in 2026.

🦟 Joplin Health Department Launches Annual Mosquito Control Program

Mosquito season is here, and the Joplin Health Department is back at it with their annual mosquito control efforts within city limits. The program combines early-morning fogging, larvicide treatment, and public education to help reduce the population of these tiny—but pesky—biters.

Here’s how it works:

  • 🦟 Fogging for adult mosquitoes happens between 4:00 and 7:30 AM using a low-toxicity EPA-approved pesticide (permethrin). Routes will be posted in advance on the city’s website.

  • 💧 Larvicide is used in standing water across public areas to stop mosquitoes from ever reaching adulthood.

  • ☎️ Think you’ve got a swarm? Call 417-623-6122 to report heavy mosquito activity.

If you'd prefer your property not be fogged, contact the Health Department to opt out.
